As students in Québec are taking to the streets, the student strike is building momentum against efforts by the Liberal government to hike post-secondary education by $1625 over the next five years.
“While the student general strike will be in its sixth week and the Liberal government of Jean Charest has yet to respond to the demands of students, tens of thousands of students and citizens will take the streets to shout their anger at tuition hikes. Education is a right, and barriers to accessible education must be eliminated !” writes the Coalition Large de l’Association pour une Solidarité Syndicale Étudiante (CLASSE).
Tadamon! calls for a Palestine solidarity bloc at the major student protest in Montreal on March 22nd, highlighting the long-standing solidarity work undertaken by the Quebec student movement in support of Palestinian students struggling against policies of Israeli occupation and apartheid.
In May 2008, l’Association pour une Solidarité Syndicale Étudiante (ASSÉ), the coalition of student unions currently leading the student strike, became the first major student union in North America to support the growing boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement in solidarity with Palestine.
Let us join together on the streets of Montreal to support the inspiring Quebec student strike while also remembering the struggles waged by Palestinian students. On a daily basis, Palestinian students are still fighting for the right to education under apartheid policies enforced by the Israeli Occupation Forces. Regularly, Palestinian universities in the West Bank face closure by the Israeli military, often blocking students from accessing university campuses like Al Najah University in Nablus. Furthermore, in the Gaza Strip, entire departments of the Islamic University in Gaza were destroyed in indiscriminate bombings at the turn of 2009.
