On Friday January 28th, Egyptians have called for the second day of anger following the historic demonstrations that took place on Tuesday January 25th across Egypt and that have continued since then. These demonstrations have shown that change and hope in Egypt is possible against the authoritarian regime under Hosni Mubarak.

Tens of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets inspired by the events and popular revolution in Tunisia. Friday January 28th will see the largest show of popular dissent in Egyptian history.

This new opposition is grassroots and youth led and it is calling for significant political, economic change in Egypt. Among their demands:

– An immediate end to Egypt’s Emergency laws. These have placed Egypt under martial law for 30 years and created, according to human rights watch, a “police state par excellance”.

– The immediate release of all those prisoners detained during the protests.

– The recall of last year’s parliamentary elections, and an end to unlimited presidential terms.

– A raise of the minimum wage to basic living standards, job creation, and an end to unaffordable gas and electricity as a result of privatization by the Mubarak regime.

Egyptians protesting for real democracy, freedom and economic dignity need our support and solidarity. There are currently 1,000 protesters detained since the beginning of the demonstrations this past Tuesday and many in Egypt are blocked from reaching the outside world through internet. We must shed the light internationally on what the regime is doing to our brave brothers and sisters who are protesting for a better life and a better Egypt.

End to Mubaraks rule!! Free Egypt!!!

This picture is not the 1000 De La Gauchetière in Montreal. I know because I work in this building for 15 years. If you look closely in the background of the picture you will see palm trees and I’ve never seen palm in downtown Montreal and you? 😉
