Every May, Palestinians around the world gather to commemorate the Nakba- or “catastrophe”- marking the expulsion of the Palestinian people in 1948. At this time, more than 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly driven from their lands and their homes by Zionist forces and over 500 villages were destroyed in an effort to erase the memory of Palestine.

Today, more than 5 million remain in the global diaspora and in refugee camps, forming the largest refugee population in the world. Furthermore, the Nakba remains ongoing as settlement construction continues, the apartheid wall expands, houses are demolished, the siege of Gaza is upheld, and Palestinian citizens of Israel face systemic discrimination and exclusion.

Despite 63 years of dispossession and displacement, the Palestinian struggle for justice, self-determination and the right of return continues. Join us for a film screening and discussion to commemorate the Nakba and remember the ongoing colonization and oppression faced by Palestinians to this day.

Kafer Kassem The Tragic Story of a Palestinian Village
Director: Burhan Alaouie, 1974
Lebanon/Belgium
Documentary in Arabic with French Subtitles

On the eve of the Israeli attack on Egypt in 1956, the state declared a curfew in Arab areas without notifying the residents beforehand. While returning home from work, the Israeli army carried out a surprise attack resulting in a massacre later dubbed the “Kafr Kassem Massacre”.
