Over one-hundred people gathered in downtown Montreal on December 31st, in freezing winter winds, for a new year’s eve vigil to stand against the current Israeli assault on Gaza. As people around the world marked 2009, the Palestinian people in Gaza are being crushed under a massive Israeli bombardment. Israel’s attack on Gaza has sparked major protests around the world, including in Montreal where thousands have gathered to protest the Israeli bombardment throughout the past week.

Tout comme le reste du monde, nous avons passé la dernière semaine à observer, sous le choc et emplis de dégoût, l’assaut continu d’Israël dans la bande de Gaza. Alors que le décompte des morts augmente et qu’une nouvelle tragédie prend place, nous ressentons le besoin de prendre la parole en tant que jeunes juif et juives vivant au Canada et dénoncer ce qu’Israël fait en notre nom.

The evening of 3 January, we realized that if there was any truth to Israeli war minister Ehud Barak’s words, it’s that this invasion will be a long one. At approximately 9:15pm local time Israeli forces entered the Strip from three locations. From the east of Gaza City and the northern towns of Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, tanks rolled into the Palestinian residential areas while Israeli F-16s created a cover from the sky. At the same time, Israeli tanks and infantry troops entered Rafah from the southeast, while tanks shelling and artillery fire rained on the Mintar area of Gaza City. Israeli warships were simultaneously barraging Gaza City from the sea. The entire Strip was surrounded and being heavily pounded by Israeli missiles and artillery fire.

Gaza Strip, 5, January, 2009 Israeli War on Gaza still rise up in various points through the occupied Gaza Strip. More civilians killed in opposition of Israeli announced aim of hitting the Hamas militants. Monday morning a massacre happened in Al Zaytoun Quarter as Israeli army gathered around 30 persons in one house and then bombed them. Medical sources said that 14 killed and 60 injured. Around 10 of them children some are women and some other youth old people.

Des milliers de citoyens se sont rassemblés dans les rues du centre-ville de Montréal hier après-midi, pour protester en solidarité contre le siège militaire de l’état apartheid Israélien qui perdure depuis plus de une semaine maintenant. En plus de l’invasion terrestre récente, plus de 500 Palestiniens ont été tués et plus de 2257 blessés. Pendant ce temps, des centaines de manifestations s’exécutent à l’échelle internationale par le biais d’un mouvement de mobilisation de solidarité. Les manifestants de Montréal ont aussi condamné le support du gouvernement Canada aux attaques militaires israélien sur les civils palestiniens et les infrastructures civils de Gaza.

Protests have swept the globe in response to the current Israeli attack on Gaza and thousands have taken to the streets in France this past week, including multiple demonstrations in Paris. Thousands gathered in the Barbès district Paris for a demonstration, while a major protest was staged in downtown Paris to protest the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who was hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy last week.

Gaza Strip, 3 January, 2009: In the recent reporting period of this report, Israeli army is using all naval, ground and air forces to attack Gaza. With the early hours of Saturday morning, Israeli army started to shell and launch heavy air strikes against Gaza. Most of the bombings targeted buildings, farming and agricultural fields. The bombings range dramatically increased midday leaving 5 dead and ten other wounded.

Le gouvernement canadien a réagi aux attaques meurtrières contre la population de Gaza exactement de la même manière qu’il l’avait fait quand Israël avait bombardé sauvagement le Liban à l’été 2006: en claironnant «qu’Israël a le droit de se défendre» et en affirmant mollement sa préoccupation pour la catastrophe humanitaire vécue par les Palestiniens.
