Syria has seen upheaval and conflict over more than seven years: popular revolutionary uprising, civil war in different forms, outright military confrontation. In the midst of this, there has been injury, death, destruction and displacement of the Syrian people. There has also been defiance and resistance to oppression. Words fail in the face of such suffering and such determination to resist. And what of images? What can images say and reveal to us?
With cameras in hand, women and men in Syria have sought to show the painful present. They also show us what has been forgotten and what must be remembered. These images are always in flux—the child who has become mute, women indestructible in a context of destruction and men compelled to compromise. These are images of a time of extremes and finalities. More than ever, Syria sees us as we see Syria.
These films give voice to Syrians. Some in exile unable to return, some returning despite the risks, some, like the Palestinian residents of Yarmouk camp and neighbourhood, facing the prospect of another exile or the certainty of uncertainty where they are. For all, there is the force of circumstances and few free choices.
Regards Syriens collective presents the 3rd edition of the contemporary Syrian cinema screening series Syria Sees You in collaboration with la Cinémathèque québécoise; Concordia University Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema; Tadamon! Montréal; À l’espace Syrie.
