Palestinians are once again at the fault lines of popular grassroots resistance against ongoing colonization, occupation and apartheid. Since March 30th- or Land Day in Palestine- thousands have marched in the Great March of Return. The Gaza strip is home to 1.5 million Palestinians, of which 1.2 million are displaced refugees from 1948. They have been living under siege and constant Israeli military aggression since 2005, which has been supported by the United States and Canada. Despite snipers, bombardments, and the killing of numerous protesters, they have continued their historic march to return to the lands they had been displaced from 70 years ago, during the Nakba (or catastrophe).
A South African Trade union congress has qualified their struggle as “a global symbol of resistance against apartheid, occupation and colonialism in our age”. It is resistance not just against their own occupation, but against a world where an increasing number of people continue to be displaced from their lands and livelihoods in the interests of an ever-smaller elite- be it Indigenous communities facing the theft of their lands and resources for extractive industries, the increasing militarization of cities and police brutality against Black people in the Unties States, or the construction of walls in Europe and across the US/Mexico border to stop the freedom of movement of migrants. The response of G7 countries has been militarization, repression and the construction of walls to protect their power- not to create a world based on justice and equality.
The Palestinian struggle is also the linchpin against the G7 and US imperialism in the Middle East. The G7 countries support Israeli apartheid in order to protect their foreign interests in the resources of the region. This is precisely why Donald Trump declared Jerusalem to be the eternal capital of Israel. The result has been the legitimization and support of the ongoing occupation and ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
The Palestinian struggle therefore requires global solidarity and resistance. We need to build grassroots campaigns that support the call made in 2005 by 170 Palestinian organizations to build a global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement until the occupation ends, until all Palestinians have the right to return to their lands, and until full equality is granted to all Palestinians living inside Israel. Our solidarity must be felt from June 7th to June 9th, while Trump and other G7 leaders hide behind their wall in Quebec. We will make our solidarity visible with those fighting against walls from Palestine to Mexico. Until Palestine is free, none of us are free! No to apartheid from Turtle Island to Palestine!
Tadamon is calling on all those who stand with the struggle of all colonized people to build a Palestine contingent in the anti-G7 demonstrations in Quebec City on June 7th. Join us at the corner of Chemin St-Foy and Avenue des Braves- look for the Palestine banner and flags!
