As the death-toll rises in Gaza, the government of Canada is largely silent. Worse, it supports Israel’s murderous rampage against Gaza and talks of Israel’s “right to defend itself”. What does this mean?
It means that the Harper government is happy to let Israel continue its all-out attack on a largely defenseless people. It means that Canada sides with the world’s 4th greatest military power as it smashes Gaza, destroying everything in its path. It means that Canada’s government justifies mass murder.
Let us not misunderstand Israel’s intentions. Israel’s leading newspaper, Ha’aretz, has revealed that this operation was planned over 6 months ago, precisely when Israel was negotiating a truce with the government of Gaza.
Since then, Israel has continuously violated the truce by means of military attacks and by preventing food, fuel and medicine from entering Gaza. Then, whenever Gaza militants have fired on Israel, Israel has used these largely ineffective attacks to paint itself as the victim when it is in fact the aggressor.
The collective punishment of 1.5 million people is utterly illegal under international law. As Bruce Katz, President of PAJU (Palestinian and Jewish Unity) has stated , “Israel’s criminal actions in Gaza today, like its attack against Lebanon in 2006, prove that Israel’s leaders are war criminals. Indeed, their decisions and actions are criminalizing the state of Israel itself.”
What can you do? Join us in expressing solidarity with Gaza.
Every week, PAJU and CAIA (the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid) hold a vigil downtown in front of the Indigo Book Store to protest the backing given by the owners of Indigo/Chapters to Israel’s apartheid regime. This week our vigil will be dedicated to the people of Gaza.
It is time to stand with the people of Gaza. Join us this Friday at noon to demand a halt to Israel’s murderous assault.
Come to the “Save Gaza Vigil”, this Friday, January 2nd at noon, on the corner of Ste-Catherine and McGill College! Show support for the suffering people of Gaza.
Salam
