performances from:
* ESMERINE
Bruce Cawdron-percussion
Beckie Foon-cello
Esmerine is the duo of Bruce Cawdron and Beckie Foon, recently joined by harpist Sarah Page and drummer/percussionist Andrew Barr. Esmerine has released two extremely well received, majestic records, on Madrona Records. The band combines various timbers of marimbas, cello, harp, percussion, and dulcimer to create swirling sweet melodies and triumphant poly-rhythms. www.esmerine.com
* JEAN THE HATCHET
Sarah Neufeld-violin
Shahzad Ismaily-percussion
Colin Stetson-bass saxophone
Jean the Hatchet, the collaboration of Violinist Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), Shahzad Ismaily on drums (Carla Bozulich, Yoko Ono, Will Oldham) and Colin Stetson (Sway Machinery, Bell Orchestre, Antibalas) on Bass Saxophone, sounds like: “The Burgundians were making an assault, and one of their number had actually planted a flag upon the battlements, when Jean, axe in hand, flung herself upon him, hurled him into the moat, tore down the flag, and revived the drooping courage of the garrison.”
* COLIN STETSON
solo saxophone
“Colin Stetson is an absolute master of the saxophone … New History Warfare Vol.1 is a truly impressive, fully formed, and highly individual musical statement … Stetson’s compositions and ability to tell a musical story are what make this a great album. You haven’t heard saxophone music quite like this”. – Sean Westergard, allmusic.com | www.colinstetson.com
This is the eighth Artists Against Apartheid concert occurring within the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid.
