Bil’in’s historic lawsuit in the Quebec Superior Court began today in Montreal, the lawsuit was launched by the village against Green Park International and Green Mount International, two companies registered in Quebec who are constructing illegal Israeli settlements on Bil’in lands.
In solidarity with the ongoing popular struggle in Bil’in village we are calling on people to attend the key court hearings taking place at the Quebec Superior Court in Montreal over the next couple days. A strong presence in the court room will illustrate the strong popular support that Bil’in maintains within the Palestinian solidarity movement in Canada, your presence in court is critical please come-out to show your solidarity over the next days, if even for a couple hours your presence at court will make a big difference.
In June 2009, Mohamed Khatib of Bil’in’s Popular Committee Against the Wall and Emily Schaeffer, an Israeli lawyer representing the village of Bil’in, have recently toured 11 Canadian cities to speak on Bil’in and the historic court case that begun in Montreal on Monday June 22.
Across Canada hundreds of people have gathered in multiple cities, from Halifax to Vancouver to express their solidarity with Bil’in struggle and to learn more about this historic lawsuit in Montreal.
Since 2005, villagers have led weekly protests, with the active participation from both Israeli and international solidarity activists, in opposition to illegal Israeli colonization and annexation of Palestinian land.
Bil’in’s lawsuit village in Quebec Superior Court against Green Park International and Green Mount International, two companies registered in Quebec. The companies are accused of illegally constructing residential and other buildings on the village’s lands. According to the lawsuit, the lands of Bil’in are subject to the rules and obligations of international law because the West Bank is currently under Israeli military occupation.
Bil’in’s case against the construction of settlements on their land is based on the provisions of the Geneva Convention, which prohibit an occupying power from transferring its civilian population into territory that it has occupied as a result of war. The case against Green Park and Green Mount seeks an immediate order from the Canadian court that it end its illegal activities.
