Lebanon a war of destruction: Dispatches from Beirut
An interview with Sawsan Kalache and Stefan Christoff, two members of the Montreal-based Tadamon! collective who are currently in Beirut. The delegation of the Montreal-based group has been working out of Beirut, reporting on the events that have taken place over the past 48 hours. Lebanon is in the midst of the fiercest Israeli bombardment since the liberation of south Lebanon in 2000.
Delegation members have been reporting that the mood in Lebanon is extremely tense. Israel has been systematically targeting civilian infrastructure in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Ten bridges and the Beirut international airport have been attacked, and the main road from Beirut to the south has been cut, isolating the south, causing benzene shortages in the capital, clogging roads and cutting off escape as people flee the bombing zones and foreigners rush to leave the country. At the moment of the interviews, over forty civilian deaths have been reported.
