In recent weeks and months Lebanon has faced major political upheaval, marked by massive street demonstrations, international political intervention and a national general strike. Lebanon’s political opposition maintains an ongoing open-air demonstration in central Beirut, which commenced on December 1st, 2006, fueled by popular discontent toward the current national government.

Lebanon’s political opposition has mobilized hundreds of thousands of people, who accuse the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora of promoting harmful neo-liberal economic policies and political collusion with western powers including the U.S. Vivid political debate in Lebanon and throughout the Lebanese Diaspora presents challenging political questions toward both the current government and political opposition regarding growing sectarian strife across an increasingly divided nation.

The current power struggle in Lebanon presents alarming and essential questions regarding the political identity of a nation still recovering from the 2006 Israeli assault which left over 1300 dead and much of the country in ruins. Thousands remain displaced and in mourning from the Israeli attack which drew powerful condemnation from throughout the globe.

Tadamon! Montreal continues to organize in Montreal in an effort to build solidarity with voices calling for social and economic justice in Lebanon, while attempting to highlight these ongoing struggles in North America. Members of the Tadamon! collective in Montreal recently traveled to Lebanon and witnessed first-hand the ongoing opposition demonstrations and sit-in in December 2006.

Lebanese voices opposing internal sectarian strife, divisive foreign intervention and Israeli violations of Lebanon will continue to be highlighted in Tadamon!’s work. Tadamon! is currently focused on two major political campaigns, our direct participation in a growing international movement to enforce Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the colonial state of Israel, and a campaign directed toward the Canadian government to demand that the Lebanese movement Hezbollah, be removed from the Canadian list of “terrorist” organizations.
