photo essay: Commemoration of the 62nd Anniversary of the Nakba (“the catastrophe”)
- The key is one of the enduring symbols of the Nakba, representing the claim that Palestinians still have to their homes and properties in Palestine.
In commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the Nakba (Arabic for “the catastrophe”), Tadamon! held an afternoon gathering on Sunday May 16 in Parc Lafontaine.
In a simulated refugee tent, we offered tea, coffee and Middle Eastern desserts to our guests. Our event featured an exhibition of historic photographs of the Nakba as well as a performance of the traditional music of the oud.
We spent a sunny afternoon informing passers-by about the Palestinian Nakba of 1948 and its continuing impact on the Palestinian people. This continuing impact includes Israel’s ongoing policies of illegal land expropriation, colonization, occupation and apartheid. We also distributed information about the international movement for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid that aims to end the ongoing Nakba.
