As popular protests continue across North Africa and the Middle East, inspired by ongoing revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, diaspora communities globally have lead grassroots solidarity protests. In Montreal, Collectif de solidarité au Canada avec les luttes sociales en Tunisie lead signifigant solidarity protests in downtown Montreal, backing the popular uprising in Tunisia before the international media spotlight focused on the protests that lead to the ouster of dictator Ben Ali. Tunisian activists also applied significant political pressure on Canada’s Conservative government to freeze the assets of Ben Ali’s billionaire relative, Belhassen Trabelsi, who was intensely involved in the corruption of Tunisia’s dictatorship. Beyond Tunisia, local Egyptian activists in Montreal held a series of protests against U.S.-backed dictator Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, joining a global wave of protests inspired by the Egyptian movement for change that toppled the U.S.-backed Mubarak regime. This event will provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the ongoing struggles in Egypt, in Tunisia, and across the Middle East, while focusing on the importance of international solidarity with the popular uprisings across the region.
