The Canadian Left has taken a major step forward in its opposition to Zionism. On Saturday, Montréal held probably the largest pro-Palestinian demonstration in Canadian history. Despite some ridiculous media reports, I estimate that there were between 12,000 and 17,000 (possibly as many as 25,000) people marching through the streets of downtown. “Jews, Christians, Muslims, anglos, francos, grandmothers and children walked together yesterday in the bitter cold to call for an immediate ceasefire in [Gaza],” noted the Montréal Gazette. The march was endorsed and organized by all three major Québec unions and most of the province’s social groups.

Quebec inked an economic partnership agreement with Israel this fall in Jerusalem. Attracting little attention from major media outlets, Quebec’s bilateral accord was signed during a government-led delegation to Israel that included high-level state officials and corporate representatives this past September, amidst Israel’s ongoing siege of Gaza.

Thursday, January 8th : In protest against the ongoing Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip activists in Montreal have taken action at the Israeli Consulate in Montreal.

Serving a detailed eviction notice to the Israeli Consulate in Montreal demonstrators demanded “the eviction of the Consulate of Israel, the expulsion of the Consular General and an immediate end to the Israeli assault on Gaza.”

In response to the ongoing Israeli bombardment on Gaza, Tadamon! is calling on people to directly contact Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Cannon.

Please take a couple minutes to directly call the offices for both the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to demand: that Canada call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, a cessation of the ongoing Israeli siege on Gaza and for Canada to address the root cause for the current violence: Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and the denial of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

Thousands gathered in downtown Montreal yesterday to protest Israel’s ongoing military siege on Gaza hours after Israeli forces commenced a major land invasion. As over 500 Palestinians have been killed in the past week under an Israeli aerial bombardment protests have swept across the world including major demonstrations in Canada. Demonstrators in Montreal also targeted the Canadian government support for Israeli military actions in Gaza which have heavily targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

Montreal, Quebec December 2008: In response to the current Israeli bombardment on the Gaza Strip, hundreds gathered in downtown Montreal to protest the Israeli assault which has until now killed an estimated 300 Palestinians, the majority civilians. Air strikes continue to pound Gaza for the fourth consecutive day, as high level Israeli officials have labelled the offensive an “all-out war”, while from Beirut to Cairo major protests have swept across the Middle East. Additional protests and actions in solidarity with Gaza will occur in Montreal within the upcoming days.
