One year ago, Israel launched a military assault on Lebanon, commencing a 34 day war that left more than 1300 Lebanese civilians dead, large parts of the national infrastructure destroyed and southern Lebanon littered with over one million unexploded cluster bomblets.

Globe and Mail coverage of Lebanon suffers from ideological interventions

When newspapers send correspondents afield to report on world events, the position is fraught with opportunity and responsibility. Opportunity to share meaningful insight into current events, and responsibility to accurately report on them.

In many cases, unfortunately, other motivations prevail. For the owners and editors of the few papers that shell out for foreign correspondents, the opportunity to shape public opinion seems too tempting to pass up, even if it comes at the expense of insight and accuracy.

The Globe and Mail’s Middle East correspondent Mark MacKinnon has been publishing dispatches on the ongoing political crisis in Lebanon regularly from Beirut. It should be noted that Mackinnon’s reports are often superior to the generic newswire reports carried by many newspapers. Regrettably, this speaks more to the skewed quality of wire reports and less to the Globe’s correspondent’s capacity to promote accurate understanding of events in Lebanon.

Tadamon! [Solidarity! in Arabic], is a Montreal-based collective of social justice organizers & media activists working to build relationships of solidarity between grassroots political movements for social and economic justice in Beirut & Montreal.

Building on Tadamon!’s 2006 summer delegation to Lebanon & its organizing efforts in Montreal against the Conservative government’s support for the Israeli military assault on Lebanon, Tadamon! has outlined new priorities for the coming months.

Montreal solidarity activists in Beirut – available for interview on current crisis

13 July 2006, Montreal/Beirut – Members of the Montreal-based Tadamon! collective are in Beirut and available for interviews on the current crisis. Since mid-June, the three-person delegation from the Montreal group has been working out of Beirut, meeting with social justice and cultural organisations, participating in popular campaigns, coordinating solidarity projects between Montreal and Beirut, and creating radio reports on social justice issues in the country. Delegation members were chosen for their experience and knowledge of Lebanese and regional affairs.

Weekly Reports on Struggles for Social & Economic Justice in LEBANON

Tadamon! a collective of media activists & community organizers from
Montreal working to build solidarity with movements for social & economic
justice in Lebanon are currently on a delegation to Lebanon and the Middle
East. As part of this delegation members of Tadamon! will be producing
weekly 30 minutes audio reports for individual download, podcast &
broadcast on upwards of 20 campus / community radio stations in Canada.

Tadamon!’s weekly audio reports will focus on the present day cultural,
social and political realities in the Middle East from a perspective of
social justice. Radio Tadamon!’s reports will be produced on a weekly
basis and will be regularly uploaded from the Middle East each THURSDAY
for broadcast, download & podcast internationally throughout July &
August.
