Daily Star: Using song to amplify calls for social change

Charbel Rouhana blends political awareness, traditional Arabic music and
compositional experimentation

BEIRUT: Somehow Lebanon’s electric political climate always seems to provide
fertile ground for innovative artistic expression. Such expression may be
rooted in the country’s rich cultural history, but on occasion, it also offers
important insight into the present challenges facing Lebanon (and by extension
the region at large).

Over the past nine years, Charbel Rouhana has become a fixture on the local
music scene. A rising star and longtime “special guest” at the Blue Note Cafe
in Hamra, Rouhana uses song to present an inspiring voice for social change.
The celebrated oud player and contemporary composer has successfully harnessed
folkloric Lebanese traditions and combined them with present-day musical
innovation and insightful social commentary.

West Beirut is a drama by Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiry that paints a dramatic picture of children’s lives during the Lebanese civil-war. The film begins as the first events which sparked the Lebanese civil war begin in April, 1975. Doueiry represents the partitioned Beirut along sectarian lines through the lives of Tarek and his friend Omar. While Tarek makes Super 8 movies with his friend, the backdrop of war and division haunt the camera. As he comes of age, the war moves inexorably from adventure to tragedy.

Palestine: Imagination nation

Photo: Israeli soldier holds a pile of Palestinian IDs at a checkpoint.

During this year’s U.S. presidential election campaign, there was almost no mention made of Israel and the Palestinians by either of the major candidates. That is, until the waning days of the race, when John McCain made a last-ditch attempt to cast aspersions upon Barack Obama by highlighting a connection to respected Palestinian-American academic and Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi. “It was shameful for them to try and paint Professor Khalidi as anything but an esteemed scholar and academic,” says lawyer and Palestinian-American activist Noura Erakat. “It was reprehensible.”
