In the heart of Montreal Denis Kosseim, of the Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine (CJPP) waves a Palestinian flag during a solidarity demonstration with Gaza on Saturday, February 9th.

As part of the international Israeli Apartheid Week that occurred in cities across Canada and around the world, a series of events occurred in Montreal to mark Israeli Apartheid Week in February 2008. Israeli Apartheid Week is now in its fourth consecutive year and in 2008, Israeli Apartheid Week occurs during the 60th year of the Palestinian Nakba (”catastrophe”)– 60 years of dispossession, ethnic cleansing and exile for Palestinians resulting from the creation of the state of Israel.

Le cinéaste Malcolm Guy, à travers une lettre ouverte aux Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois, se retire du jury du prix annuel 2008 de la Fondation Alex et Ruth Dworkin. Cette récompense, à laquelle est jointe une bourse de 5000 $, a pour but de favoriser la tolérance dans le domaine du cinéma.

Palestinian hip-hop doc premieres at Sundance

The Palestinian hip-hop group DAM, which has spawned a cult following and a small army of imitators, stars in a new film about the underground music scene in the Middle East, which premiered on Friday at the Sundance Film Festival. “Slingshot Hip Hop,” by director Jackie Salloum, offers a peek into contemporary life in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the Middle East hip-hop culture inspired by the political positions of American rappers such as Chuck D, Tupac Shakur and Eminem.

2007 has been a busy and exciting year for the Palestine solidarity movement. While Mahmoud Abbas and Ehud Olmert attempt to hide Israel’s crimes behind the lie of ‘peace negotiations’, thousands of individuals and organizations around the world are building a real and effective alternative centered on boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid. Here in Toronto, the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid (CAIA) has been a proud participant in this global movement. This brief report captures some of our activities over 2007.

Beirut’s contemporary art scene struggled through 2007

BEIRUT: For the contemporary art scene in Beirut, 2006 was a tough year, as it was for nearly every other sector in the country, creative industries and otherwise. Twelve months ago, few might have guessed that 2007 would be worse. But it was. The opposition protests in Downtown Beirut turned epic. Riots broke out on Black Tuesday. Explosions and assassinations continued. The fighting at Naher al-Bared and the displacement of thousands of refugee-camp residents made vibrant cultural life remote, irrelevant and impossible. The ongoing fiasco surrounding the failure of Lebanon’s political class to elect a president is at best bad theater.

BETHLEHEM, West Bank: Graffiti artist Banksy is trying to bring cheer and boost tourism in Bethlehem this Christmas with a series of subversive murals in the town revered as Jesus’ birthplace.

The elusive street artist has painted six provocative new images — including a dove of peace strapped with a bulletproof vest and a young girl with pigtails frisking an Israeli soldier — on buildings around the West Bank town.
