Ce panel final abordera les luttes autochtones pour la terre et la résistance sur l’l’Île de la Tortue, et soulignera les liens avec la lutte palestinienne pour défendre la terre et résister à l’occupation israélien. La défense de la terre est une méthode de lutte contre l’occupation et le colonialisme et est intégrée à des mouvements autochtones contre le colonialisme à L’Île Tortue et en Palestine.

Biographies:

Arthur Manuel: Arthur est un porte-parole pour le réseau Indigenous Network on Economies and Trade and Defenders of the Land. Ex-président du Interior Alliance of BC First Nations, Manuel est un leader éminent pour l’opposition à l’agenda du gouvernement canadien, qui consiste en anéantir les droits d’accords autochtones et d’assimiler les peuples autochtones dans l’entièreté des politiques canadiennes. Actif localement aux luttes pour la terre du Secwepemc, ainsi qu’au niveau national, il a aussi déployé la lutte à l’internationale et au Forum Permanente des Nations Unies sur les Problèmes Autochtones, poursuivant le chemin de son père, George Manuel, président du National Indian Brotherhood et fondateur du World Council of Indigenous Peoples.

Monira Kitmitto: Monira Kitmitto est une militante Palestinienne et membre du comité coordonnateur de la Coalition contre l’apartheid israélien. Elle est également membre du conseil d’administration du Palestine House à Toronto. Elle a été impliquée dans la lutte contre l’apartheid, en soutenant le CNA et le peuple Sud-Africain dans leur lutte pour le libération. Elle a travaillé dans les camps de réfugiés Palestiniens au Liban, et a été un membre du mouvement féministe Palestinien.

La 9e édition de la Semaine annuelle contre l’Aparthéid israélien présentera une série de conférences, ateliers, projections de film, manifestations et évènements culturels, dans le but de sensibiliser et conscientiser le public à la campagne de Boycott, Desinvestissment, et Sanctions (BDS) contre l’apartheid israélien.

Le mois dernier, Israël a assassiné plus de 150 Palestiniens gazaouis dans une brutale offensive terrestre, marine et aérienne. Gaza, une bande de terre mesurant approximativement 360 km² (à peu près la grandeur de Montréal), est habitée par 1,7 millions de personnes parmi lesquelles la moitié sont des enfants. As the first week of Israel’s operation “Pillar of Clouds” draws to an end, more than 120 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, including 24 children. For Palestinians in Gaza, are denied the fundamental right to education. Through the ongoing siege on Gaza the continued air strikes, and the effects of the 2008 operation Cast Lead that resulted in 1,400 deaths, Palestinians in Gaza are denied the fundamental right to education.

On Thursday November 22nd students in Montréal and across the globe will be marching for accessible education. This demonstration is being held at the same time as thousands of Palestinians students continue to face daily bombardment from the Israeli Military. Our solidarity is a must! As ASSÉ (l’Association pour une Solidarité Syndicale Étudiante), the coalition of student unions currently leading the student strike, asserted in their recent call out for student solidarity: “It is our responsibility to show them that we, students of Quebec, stand in solidarity of every movement, of every struggle. To global attacks, let’s build an international response!”

Destruction in Homs, Syria, April 2012

Brief context

The people’s struggle in Syria for liberation from the brutal, dictatorial rule of the Assad regime has arrived at a critical juncture. Central neighborhoods of Syria’s largest cities, Damascus and Aleppo, have become the sites of direct armed confrontation between the forces of opposition to the regime – especially the Free Syrian Army (FSA) – and the state’s military and security forces. The battles have been especially intense and protracted in Aleppo with devastating consequences for residents of the city. The state has used heavy artillery, aerial bombardments and shelling and has deployed troops, snipers and security operatives in a wide range of city quarters in pursuit of its strategy of dealing with the revolutionary movement by sheer repression and force. The result has been heavy civilian casualties, destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, mass displacements of population and, in some areas, dire humanitarian conditions (e.g. lack of food, no electricity, water shortages, no essential municipal services). State military attacks on civilian areas amount to “war crimes” according to some human rights organizations (e.g. Human Rights Watch). Meanwhile, the actions of some elements of the opposition (broadly understood) have also been qualified as human rights violations (e.g. summary executions of captured regime fighters). Armed confrontations between opposition and regime forces, in Aleppo and elsewhere in Syria, and the increased violence that has resulted are the outcome of the Assad regime’s strategy of using repression, terror and brute force to deal with oppositional activism, protest and popular calls for freedom, dignity and the end of absolutist rule. In the face of regime brutality and terror tactics, the popular uprising which began in March 2011 took armed form, increasingly, in late 2011 and became decidedly “militarized” in early 2012. With the turn to armed struggle and the advent of fighting in Damascus and Aleppo the revolution has arrived at a crucial and important juncture.

Tadamon! collective is calling on Palestine solidarity activists in Québec and Canada to support the upcoming World Social Forum Free Palestine, taking place in Fall 2012, in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

A global expression of solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom, supported by social movements in Brazil, is essential at this critical moment in history and will build constructive organizational support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israeli apartheid.

“Occupied Palestine is part of every free heartbeat in this world and her cause continues to inspire solidarity across the globe,” states the International Coordination Committee for The World Social Forum Free Palestine, describing the event as “an expression of the human instinct to unite for justice and an echo of the World Social Forum’s opposition to neo-liberal hegemony, colonialism, and racism through struggles for social, political and economic alternatives to promote justice, equality, and the sovereignty of peoples.”
